It’s no secret that Disney Channel original movies a.k.a. Disney Channel Dcoms were a big part of our nostalgic childhood , my earliest memory of watching a Disney Dcoms ones with my cousin Gianni shortly after moving to Florida back in 2001.
From that day forward I never missed a Disney Channel Dcom when it aired whenever we saw the boy in the jersey do the flip we knew it was time to wind down from the days events and watched a Disney Channel original movie with a very sentimental hidden lesson behind it .
For the past few years we have seen a decline in Disney Channel original movies and the sentimental moment behind them that could for one of many things
- Disney+ streaming service that launched in 2019.
- The viewership of Disney Channel going downhill as the years go by as we know it Disney Channel hasn’t had the best ratings and again I believe it has to do with streaming services and easy access to the Internet . When I think about it it makes total sense that Disney dcom’s are in jeopardy now with the many opportunities but we have to stream it makes no sense for the networks to air dcoms.
do I believe that Disney dcom’s not airing on Disney Channel would mean less chance for awareness regarding disabilities of such?
Absolutely not, I believe that the sky is the limit and filmmakers and film writers still have the ability to make the perfect dcom’s that represent those with disabilities like True confessions and Miracle in the lane two.
Although when it comes to representation in people being more aware about disabilities for those that don’t have the streaming services yes I think that could jeopardize stereotypes being continued for those with disabilities as well, but on the flipside I feel like now we have different ways to share the messages about disability and movies because of websites like YouTube and other streaming services.
Furthermore we also have the ability to go back into the library and find these movies that we truly feel represented as a whole .
So when you put this all together in retrospect I don’t think the Disney Channel dcom ending its run after several years will affect disability and representation if anything it will encourage people like me to continue to push for proper representation within the mainstream media .
