As a person with a disability, who’s watched TV for several years and has a dream of becoming a TV show developer and film maker to bring awareness to those with disabilities and more inclusion within television.
I have noticed one problem with the television and representation which is you’re never gonna get the proper representation all the time.
Why do I think that is society and itself everyone with the disability has a different perspective and a different way of properly representing themselves and sometimes you’ll can’t fully represent a condition or disability within a TV series because of this constant obstacle.
I have been guilty of being the ultimate TV critic when it comes to proper representation for disabilities in particularly Cerebral Palsy because I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three and since then I’ve created my own film and representation of it basically by living my life to the best of my ability .
So whenever I watch TV shows like breaking bad and speechless I look for the proper representation for those with Cerebral Palsy but the truth is I’ve never been able to find the proper representation because everybody’s perspective of life living with this condition is different and a lot of the times people judge it
Based on these two things:
- A personal experience you may have had with yourself or loved one diagnosed with this condition
2. How they think people with disabilities should look like
But the truth is there’s no proper representation and there’s no right or wrong way to represent those with disabilities in television , I’ve learned a long time ago it’s better to observe what’s on the screen versus automatically judging the way someone wrote a character with the disability because even through those different perspectives you could still learn something
