Watching “Wish Upon a Star” from the Little Mermaid series teaches you these lessons
I recently decided to watch an episode from the Disney Channel series “Little Mermaid” that aired from 1993 to 1997. An episode of the series Wish Upon a Star featured a mermaid named Gabriella living in the ocean with hearing loss and communicating using American sign language.
Watching the episode, I realized there were many valuable lessons you could learn if you just sat down and watched a few minutes of it as someone with a disability. Here are a few I took away from watching the episode:
- Every person has their own way of communicating – from the moment Gabriella and Ariel become friends, Ariel uses eye contact to communicate with Gabriella. This part of the episode teaches people that everyone has the ability to communicate and be a part of society, regardless of disability.
- People with disabilities aren’t less different from the average person- from the episode we learned that people with disabilities are no different from anyone else, so we shouldn’t treat them any differently.
- people with disabilities can have a huge impact on your life. Ariel learns a very valuable lesson about meeting different kinds of people around the sea while being impacted by Gabriela. This is because anyone can make an impact on your life despite their different abilities.
Let us know what lessons you learned from the episode of the Little Mermaid series, Wish Upon a Star, in the comments below as there are many lessons behind the shows that we loved and watched as children that we could still learn today.
