DJ Ty was born with spastic dysplasia, which is the most common form of cerebral palsy that mostly affects the left side of the body.
In order to get from place to place, she is reliant on a wheelchair.
Her obstacles and challenges forced her to spend most of her childhood watching television networks such as Disney Channel and Nickelodeon where she developed her love of storytelling and creativity.
When it came to disability and television, DJ Ty felt that there was a lack of representation.
After publishing several books regarding disability, DJ Ty has decided to identify episodes of shows from her childhood that featured characters with disabilities in order to raise awareness about disability inclusion and acceptance.
That’s where disability nostalgia came to life.
